Virender Sehwag, 36, is still hopeful of making it to the 30-member probables list for the World Cup 2015. At a promotional event related to ICC World Cup, Sehwag said that he hopes to see his name in the probables list, which will be announced soon.
Virender Sehwag played his last One Day International (ODI) match in December 2012. And since then, he has been struggling to make a comeback.
Virender Sehwag has appeared in three ICC World Cup tournaments; 2003, 2007 and 2011.
Although, a huge army of Virender Sehwag fans and supporters wants him to play in the 2015 World Cup, his performance in the ongoing domestic season has been far from satisfactory, so far. It is true that Sehwag is a very experienced player and he has done a lot to prove is worth, but considering his poor form in the last couple of years, it will be impossible for the selectors to give him a chance. India have a very rich pool of young talented batsmen, who are pushing each other for a place in the team. And all these players are fighting purely on the basis of merit i.e. by scoring runs in domestic cricket and/or at the international level.
But, despite not exactly setting the domestic stage on fire, the 36-year-old still harbours dreams of playing a fourth World Cup for his country.
Virender Sehwag’s biggest strength is his hand-ordination. But in the last couple of years, his eye-sight has gone down and consequentially, his reflexes are not what they used to be. At a time when he is struggling on the slow-low pitches in India, one can imagine how difficult it will be for him in Australia and New Zealand, where the pitches have lots of bouncy and pace.
It’s always good to have experienced player in the team, specially in the big tournaments, but Virender Sehwag’s bad form over a fairly long period of time can’t be ignored.
Virender Sehwag along with Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, need to understand that the only way they can make a comeback before/or for the all-important, is to perform well and force their comeback purely on the basis of merit.
The selection process in India has always favored the “experienced” players in big tournaments. And for this reason, they might give Virender Sehwag in the 30-member probables list for the World Cup 2015. But, his final in the World Cup 2015 squad is highly unlikely, in fact, it almost impossible.
