World Cup 2023: AB de Villiers Reveals Why Yuzvendra Chahal Was Dropped From India's Squad

World Cup 2023: With a major announcement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), anticipation for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India has reached new heights. The 15-person team that will compete from October 5th to November 19th has been announced.

Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and shrewd head selector Ajit Agarkar stole the show in Sri Lanka. They gave a joint press conference that cricket fans all around the globe were anticipating with bated breath. At this very moment, the world was exposed to the heroes who would represent India in the World Cup.

The importance of maintaining unity among the team was emphasised in many speeches made that day. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, emphasised that barring any unforeseen injuries, this tentative roster will stay unchanged. The management’s faith in the selected 15 is shown by their dedication to maintaining continuity.

There were several heated debates and arguments about who should make the final cut for the squad. Master cricketer and Yuzvendra Chahal’s former colleague AB de Villiers spoke out publicly against the latter’s omission from India’s ODI World Cup roster. Both Chahal and de Villiers had previously played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

De Villiers expressed his disappointment with Chahal’s exclusion in a video broadcast on his YouTube channel. He explained his choice by saying he was worried about Chahal’s batting, especially in the lower order. According to De Villiers, this was a major factor in Chahal’s dismissal from the team. He said that if India’s top-order batsmen struggled at any point during the World Cup, India would need a bowler who could hold his own with the bat under duress.

World Cup 2023: AB de Villiers Reveals Why Yuzvendra Chahal Was Dropped From India’s Squad

Chahal is a “pure match-winner,” as de Villiers put it when speaking of his extraordinary skill. But he also understood how difficult it would be to choose the best spinner for the Indian team among so many talented options. The methodical reasoning for picking a team is made clear by de Villiers’s comments.

He made the point that having bowlers who can also bat is very important in the World Cup. De Villiers mentioned players like Ravi Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav who can step up with the bat when it counts. He theorised that this was one of the reasons Chahal wasn’t included. However, de Villiers expressed disappointment that Chahal was not included in the World Cup roster, highlighting Chahal’s potential to be a game-changer.

The inclusion of two left-arm spinners is an interesting choice for India’s ODI World Cup roster. They both offer something special to the table, but whether or not they’ll both play in the same game remains to be seen. Both cricket experts and casual viewers are curious about this strategy.

The team’s lack of a right-arm spinner has also been the subject of debate. This has caused some unease among Indian team fans, who are worried about the squad’s bowling attack’s overall harmony. But the team’s leadership looks to have a plan, and they clearly have trust in its chosen spinners.

“Pure match-winner. It’s a difficult one because there are a lot of really high-class quality spinners in the Indian setup so it’s not easy to put your finger on who’s the right guy and who’s not. What I can say is sometimes in World Cups you need all your bowlers to be able to hold the bat. I am not saying Yuzi can’t hold the bat but thinking of someone like Ravi Jadeja even Kuldeep Yadav has shown that he can either bowl or play around with the bat,” De Villiers said on YouTube.

“So, maybe there was a little bit of thinking behind that to make sure if India gets seven down somewhere in the World Cup in a pressure game the guys there are the guys that can get them across the line. That’s the only thinking I have other than that Yuzi is usually an outright match-winner and it’s sad not to see him there,” De Villiers added.

With just a few weeks left till the start of the ODI World Cup, all eyes will continue to be on the Indian team’s roster and the decisions made by the selectors. While some may question the team’s selection due to the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal, the selected 15 will be focused on fulfilling India and its supporters’ ultimate aim of hoisting the World Cup title. Cricket fans across the globe are becoming more and more pumped up for the next spectacular clashes in the Indian cricket arena with each passing day.
