World Cup 2023

The World Cup 2023 is less than 100 days away, and its official schedule was released by the ICC and the BCCI, the host board, on June 27. The tournament will kick-start on October 5 with the final slated for November 19.

The upcoming World Cup 2023 will be the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup. In the 12 ODI World Cups, a number of batsmen across different countries have made their mark felt and left their big imprints with sizzling displays throughout the tournament.

In this article, we will look at the top 5 batsmen who have scored most runs in a single edition of an ODI World Cup:

Sachin Tendulkar – 673 runs in 2003

Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs in a single edition of a World Cup. The Master Blaster amassed 673 runs at an average of 61 in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa with the help of 1 century and 6 fifties, including one of the best World Cup knocks of all time – 98 (75) vs Pakistan. Tendulkar, however, fell for just 4 runs in the final vs Australia and India lost the 2003 Final.

Having featured in 6 World Cups from 1992 to 2011, Tendulkar also holds the record as the highest scorer in the history of the ODI World Cup with 2278 runs at an average of 56.

Matthew Hayden – 659 runs in 2007

Swashbuckling Australia opener Hayden cracked 659 runs in the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. The lanky left-hander averaged 73 in the tournament, notching up 3 centuries and a fifty, on his way to helping Australia to their 4th ODI World Cup title.

Rohit Sharma – 648 runs in 2019

Suryakumar Yadav

Rohit had his best ever ICC tournament in the 2019 World Cup in England where he amassed 648 runs in 9 games at an average of a whopping 81. Rohit raised 5 hundreds in the tournament, including against Pakistan and South Africa. However, Sharma failed in the semi-final against New Zealand and India suffered another heartbreak..

Rohit Sharma will now be leading the Indian team in the 2023 World Cup at home.

David Warner – 647 runs in 2019

Returning from a year-long ban for ball tampering in 2018, Australia opener David Warner made a bumper comeback in the 2019 World Cup in England. With the help of big hundreds vs Pakistan, South Africa, and Bangladesh, Warner aggregated 647 runs in the tournament at an average of 71. Australia lost in the semi-final though.

Shakib Al Hasan – 606 runs in 2019

The 2019 World Cup in England was a high-scoring one, and it’s good to see a Bangladeshi name on this list. And with no surprise, it is arguably their greatest cricketer Shakib Al Hasan here with 606 runs in the tournament at a massive average of 86 with 2 hundreds and 5 fifties to his name.
