[ICC World Cup] Yashasvi Jaiswal Likely To Replace Shubman Gill

According to the latest reports, young left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to join the Team India squad for the World Cup 2023, and is expected to train and practice with the squad until at least Shubman Gill is available.

After missing India’s first match of the tournament against Australia in Chennai, Shubman Gill is ruled out from the Afghanistan match on Wednesday in Delhi. He is also likely to miss the game against Pakistan on Saturday in Ahmedabad.

After landing in Chennai, Shubman Gill was tested positive for dengue. Initially, he was under the observation of the BCCI’s medical team. But with not much improvement in his health, Gill was hospitalized in Chennai.

The India opener was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on Monday morning and is currently under the care of medical specialists at the facility. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doctor who has been traveling with the team. Gill’s platelet count has been low for some time,

Meanwhile, some reports have said that the management and selectors have decided to call up Yashasvi Jaiswal, the left-handed opener who recently starred in India’s Gold Medal win in the Asian Games 2023 in China.

Jaiswal had a bumper IPL 2023 season with the Rajasthan Royals: the southpaw scored 625 runs at an average of 48 and strike rate of 163 with 5 fifties and a century.

The BCCI statement regarding Gill read: “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

Shubman Gill is likely to be available for the October 19 game against Bangladesh in Pune.

Ishan Kishan opened in Chennai against Australia and scored a duck. He’s likely to open against Bangladesh, too.
