After recording sizzling numbers in domestic cricket and in the IPL, it felt inevitable that Yashasvi Jaiswal would get to his maiden Test century on his debut against a meek West Indies bowling attack on a slow, spin-assisting, sluggish surface, that, though, had a bit of extra bounce.

Not the West Indies pacers, but it were the West Indies spinners who were more threatening. However, they didn’t pose as much threat as they would have liked to the Indian openers, Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma.

Jaiswal became the 17th Indian batsman to hit a century on Test debut, and the third Indian opener to do so after Shikhar Dhawan (2013 vs Australia) and Prithvi Shaw (2018 vs WI). Jaiswal’s opening partner in this game, Rohit Sharma, also had registered a century on his debut, in 2013 vs WI, and he recorded his 10th Test hundred, and 2nd outside India.

In reply to West Indies’ first innings total of 150, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal forged a massive opening stand of 229 runs, which is now India’s highest opening partnership in Tests outside Asia, and the highest opening partnership for India vs West Indies.

While Rohit Sharma got out after scoring his century, and was followed by Shubman Gill, who batted for the first time at number 3, Jaiswal remained steady at the crease and remained unbeaten on 143 at Stumps on Day 2. He partnered with Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 36, with India’s score being 312/2, and the visitors have a lead of 162 runs.

During the Kohli-Jaiswal partnership, there was one incident where Jaiswal was seemingly frustrated with pacer Kemar Roach, who perhaps was coming in his line of running between the wickets.

“Hatt na benc*** saame se,” Yashasvi Jaiswal can be heard on the stump mic.

This fumed Jaiswal who then let out an abuse in Hindi, which was also heard by Kohli who asked Jaiswal what had happened and who was coming in between his running.
