Former Indian all-rounder and World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh expressed his opinion that Mumbai Indians should have extended Rohit Sharma’s captaincy for another year in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, with Hardik Pandya serving as his vice-captain.
For the unversed, Mumbai Indians’ to appoint Pandya as captain after his notable trade from Gujarat Titans has sparked controversy.
Yuvraj Singh Slammed Mumbai Indians’ For Replacing Rohit With Hardik

During a recent interaction on Star Sports, Yuvraj acknowledged Rohit’s impressive track record as a five-time IPL-winning captain. While he understands the rationale behind introducing someone like Hardik, Yuvraj believes that Mumbai Indians should have granted the veteran batter one more season as captain. Yuvraj Singh said:
“Rohit Sharma is a 5-time IPL winner as a captain. Removing him is a big decision. I would have gotten someone in, like they brought Hardik (Pandya), but I still would have given Rohit one more season and let Hardik be the vice captain and see how the whole franchise works,”
He added: “I understand from the franchise’s point of view, they have to see the future of the franchise. But then again, Rohit is captaining India and still playing well, so it’s a big decision,”
Having clinched five titles in the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians stand as the most successful franchise in the history of the tournament, sharing the honor with Chennai Super Kings.
While Hardik Pandya secured the trophy in his debut season for Gujarat Titans, Yuvraj Singh highlighted the significant contrast in captaining Mumbai Indians compared to Gujarat Titans. He emphasized the heightened expectations and unique challenges that come with leading a team like Mumbai Indians, suggesting that it’s a different ball game altogether. Yuvraj concluded:
“In terms of talent, yes, he has great talent. Being captain of Gujarat will be different from being captain of Mumbai. Expectations are a lot. Mumbai Indians have been a big side,”
