Zak Crawley Shares The Real Story Behind "No Beer' With The Aussies

Zak Crawley Shares The Real Story Behind “No Beer’ With The Aussies: Zak Crawley, the England opening batsman, recently shed light on the real story behind the absence of the customary ‘beer with the Aussies’ after the Ashes series. Initially, reports suggested that the two teams did not partake in the traditional post-series celebration. However, Crawley cleared up the misunderstanding on the ‘Vaughany and Tuffers’ podcast.

The five-Test Ashes series culminated in a 2-2 draw, with Australia retaining the urn. This result led to the two teams’ decision to celebrate at a nightclub instead of the stadium dressing room. According to Crawley, the festivities were less exuberant than the post-series party after the 2005 Ashes.

“We had a great time, and enjoyed spending time together after a hard-fought series,” Zak Crawley explained, adding that the celebrations were more subdued due to Australia retaining the Ashes.

Zak Crawley further clarified that England’s post-series debrief took longer than usual, causing a timing clash. This extended meeting was due to the team’s goodbyes to Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali, both of whom played their final Tests in the fifth Ashes contest.

“It was a normal debrief plus send-offs. In there a bit too long, so it didn’t quite work for the Aussies,” said Crawley, explaining the absence of the conventional beer-sharing with the Aussies.

While England has managed to draw the Ashes series at home in 2019 and 2023, they have struggled against Australia Down Under in recent years. Their last Ashes triumph dates back to 2015 when they secured a 3-2 victory.

As England’s next Test assignment is a five-match series against India, early 2024, Crawley and his teammates are keen to move past the Ashes. The Ben Stokes-led team will be eager to add to their World Test Championship (WTC) tally, particularly after their points deduction for a slow over-rate in the 2023 Ashes.

The story behind the ‘No Beer with the Aussies’ incident reveals a simple timing mishap rather than any intentional break from tradition. This tale showcases the camaraderie between the two teams, who, despite their fierce rivalry on the pitch, remain comrades off it. Such interactions remind us that cricket is, indeed, a gentleman’s game.
