Where Rohit Sharma, Tim David, and Romario Shepherd blasted a spate of fours and sixes in the Mumbai Indians’ first victory of IPL 2024, it was Jasprit Bumrah who went under the radar with another outstanding display of bowling against the Delhi Capitals.
Performances like these—his 2/22 in a match where 439 runs were scored, following 0/36 against SRH in a match where 523 runs were scored—further heightened Jasprit Bumrah’s legacy as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all-time, and unarguably the best right now.
After three losses to start the season, MI registered their first win of IPL 2024. Mumbai plundered 234 runs batting first, courtesy of Rohit Sharma’s 49 (27), Ishan Kishan’s 42 (23), Tim David’s 45* (21), and Romario Shepherd’s 39* (10).
In reply, Delhi Capitals were always behind the required rate, which kept rising. The positives for Delhi were Prithvi Shaw, who scored 66 runs in 40 balls, and Tristan Stubbs, who scored 71* runs in 25 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah returned with an economy of only 5.5 vs DC
Shaw was going well before he came in the line of a searing yorker from Jasprit Bumrah, an utterly unplayable toe-crusher that floored his leg-stump. Shaw, or, for that matter, any other batter in the world, could have done nothing about a pin-point, accurate yorker from the Indian spearhead pacer. Bumrah then dismissed Porel, caught at long-on.
Yet, it’s not his wickets but his superb run-containing ability—22 runs in 24 balls, an economy of only 5.5—that made Bumrah stand out.
In a game where MI scored 234 and DC scored 205 on a typical flat pitch at the Wankhede Stadium, Jasprit Bumrah returned with enviable figures of 2/22. The margin of victory of 29 runs for MI could have been much less if not for this incredible show of bowling from Bumrah.
He once again asserted why he’s hailed as the best fast bowler in the world and the most valuable player on any team he plays for.
