Mumbai Indians will have a new skipper in the IPL 2024 season – Hardik Pandya. But it was under Rohit Sharma that the Ambani-owned franchise became the first team in IPL history to win 5 IPL titles – they achieved this feat in 2020 – before MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings equaled that tally last year.
Mumbai Indians continue to remain the only team that has had an upper hand over CSK in IPL finals – MI has defeated CSK thrice in an IPL final and lost only once.
So for any team or any captain to have any kind of decent record in terms of win percentage over the Mumbai Indians is a case study in itself. For a captain, in particular, to have got the better of Mumbai Indians regularly is a thing of admiration.
Here are the 3 most successful IPL captains against Mumbai Indians:
MS Dhoni
The first and the biggest name on this list is, unsurprisingly, MS Dhoni. The CSK captain is the most successful IPL captain – apart from five IPL titles, he has led CSK to a lot more IPL playoffs and finals than Rohit Sharma did with Mumbai Indians.
Against MI, Dhoni has recorded 16 wins, including a win in the 2010 IPL final, when it was Sachin Tendulkar who led MI. However, Dhoni did lose three finals as CSK’s skipper to MI later.
Virat Kohli
RCB superstar Virat Kohli was the franchise skipper from 2013 to 2021. RCB reached the final once in this period, in 2016, and lost it to SRH at the Chinnaswamy. Kohli has a decent record against MI as RCB’s skipper. In 16 encounters, Kohli’s RCB won 7 matches against Mumbai.
Steve Smith
Many don’t remember Steve Smith as a captain in the IPL because he didn’t lead his sides to an IPL trophy or doesn’t boast a huge fanbase like few others. But Smith’s teams were clinical at times against Mumbai Indians.
Steve Smith captained Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants and was simply outstanding against MI. In 8 games as RR and RPSG captain against Mumbai, Smith won 6 matches, which is a phenomenal 75 percent win record.
In 2017 IPL, Smith’s RPSG and Rohit’s MI met four times. RPSG won three games but MI eventually won the final.
