3 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Should Keep Backing Prithvi Shaw

Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw announced his return to form in his style, clattering a 30-ball half-century against Lucknow Super Giants. His swashbuckling knock at the top helped DC to 57/0 in 7 overs with his partner David Warner scoring just four runs.

Shaw got out for 61 off 34 balls and indicated that he’s once again getting to his dominance best; the kind of form which we saw last season in the IPL. While last year, Shaw was coming off a record-breaking Vijay Hazare Trophy, this year, he went into the IPL with an ordinary domestic season.

Shaw has played 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I for India; he’s far away from a Test spot, however, fans have been surprised with his omission from white-ball squads.

Here are 3 reasons why India captain Rohit Sharma should give more backing to Prithvi Shaw:

Talent

There is no denying that Shaw, who had led India to an u-19 World Cup triumph, is one of the most talented batsmen in the country. The youngster who smashed a century on his Test debut in 2018 had been harshly dropped by Kohli-Shastri after just one Test failure on the last Australia trip.

Under Rohit, though, fans are expecting a longer rope for Shaw whenever he gets his chance, in limited-overs cricket for the least, if not the longest format. And while Shaw, 22, has age and time on his side to make a long career, India should make use of his serious talent as much and as early as possible.

Ability to make impact in a short time

Prithvi Shaw’s USP is to hammer the bowling attacks right from the first ball – an approach, or a mindset that not many current Indian openers possess. Shaw has a strike rate of 86 in Tests, 113 in ODIs, and 147 in IPL. At the top of the order, if he stays even for a short amount of time, he is able to make an impact on the game, and the longer he stays in the middle, the more the final outcome tilts towards his team.

Future potential

Rohit Sharma is 34, Shikhar Dhawan is 36, and Virat Kohli is 33. Clearly, the ODI side is gonna have a transformation in personnel after the 2023 World Cup while there are regular changes in the T20I side.

Whether Rohit stays as a skipper or not after next year, the 22-year-old Shaw is expected to become a modern-day giant in the coming years. However, with his mercurial, aggressive batting style there are bound to be failures. That needs more backing and faith than any by the skipper. Not only Shaw as a batsman, but he could also be a potential India captain going forward.
