5 Cricket World Cup Records That Are Almost Impossible To Break

The World Cup 2023 in India is the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup. The tournament was first played in 1975.

Australia is the most successful team in the history of the ODI World Cup with 5 trophies in their cabinet, including a hat-trick. West Indies and India have won two titles. Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and England have won one trophy each.

There are some individual and team records that have been created in the ODI World Cup which are almost impossible to break.

5 records in ODI World Cup which are very difficult to be broken:

World Cup

Most runs

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most number of runs in the ODI World Cup history. Tendulkar amassed 2278 runs in 44 innings across six World Cups at an average of 56 with 6 centuries and 15 fifties.

Among the active players, the closest to Tendulkar are Shakib Al Hasan (1201 runs) and Rohit Sharma (1195 runs). Both these batters will have to have a world-record-shattering tournament in WC 2023 to break Tendulkar’s record.

It seems nigh-impossible that Tendulkar’s record for most runs in ODI World Cup will be broken ever,

Most appearances in different World Cup

India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistan’s Javed Miandad are the only two players in history to appear in 6 different editions of the ODI WC.

Considering players now prefer to retire from ODIs when they reach their early and mid-30s or fall out of form after their peak, Tendulkar and Miandad’s record of playing in 6 ODI World Cups might never be equaled as a player will have to play for over 20 years for that.

Most wickets

Australian legend Glenn McGrath holds the record for the highest number of wickets in ODI WC history: McGrath took 71 wickets in 39 matches. Among the active players, Mitchell Starc with 54 wickets is the highest. If Starc is not able to break McGrath’s record in this WC, then it would be almost impossible for anyone to sustain such form and fitness to go past McGrath’s tally.

Most dismissals as a fielder

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara holds the record for most dismissals as a fielder in the ODI WC: the Sri Lankan made 54 dismissals (caught and stumping). Adam Gilchrist had 52 dismissals and MS Dhoni had 42 dismissals. Among the active players, Mushfiqar Rahim has 30 dismissals and he’s playing his last ODI WC.

Most matches as captain

Legendary Aussie captain Ricky Ponting played 29 matches as Australia’s captain in the ODI World Cup; he led them in 3 different world cups in 2003, 2007, and 2011.

Among the currently active players, Kane Williamson has the most appearances as a captain – 11. It is incredibly difficult for a captain to retain his position as the ODI skipper for three different World Cups, spread across 12 years, as Ponting did.
