Virender Sehwag was undoubtedly one of the most destructive openers in the history of the Indian cricket team. Sehwag was known for taking away the match from the opposition in just a session or two. It was in the year 2009 when Virender Sehwag became the first-ever cricketer to score 300s in Test cricket against Sri Lankans. Virender Sehwag scored a monumental 293 runs off 254 balls against Sri Lanka. After this amazing performance, team India won the match and Virender Sehwag was awarded the Man Of The Match trophy.

Alastair Cook is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. His on-field heroics have earned him a plethora of appreciation. During his illustrious career, Cook amassed a total of 12,472 Test runs. It was in the year 2011 when Alastair Cook registered his highest score -294 runs against the Indian bowling attack at Edgbaston.
Later after the match, Alastair was awarded the man of the match for his powerful performance. However, the only sad part about the marvelous knock of Alastair Cook is the fact that he missed out on the triple-century by only six runs.
2. Martin Crowe vs Sri Lanka, 1991 – 299:

It was in the year 1991 when Martin Crowe produced his greatest Test knock of 299 runs against Sri Lanka and won the game for New Zealand.
Arjuna Ranatunga was the one who dismissed Crowe for 299 as the Kiwi skipper missed the magical 300 run mark with just one run.

The world is yet to see a player as prolific as Sir Donald Bradman. During his illustrious career, Don Bradman scored two 300s and nearly scored a third 300 in the year 1932 against South Africa in Adelaide.
The all-time legendary batsman, unfortunately, missed out on the 300-mark with only one run and finished the game with an unbeaten score of 299 runs.
