Many Indians on Twitter have been showering support and praise on South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj after seeing the spinner following his Hindu religion with his heart.

During South Africa’s World Cup 2023 match against Australia in Lucknow, after taking a wicket, Keshav Maharaj was seen praying and expressing his gratitude to god.

Then during South Africa’s match against the Netherlands in Dharamsala, when his time to bat came, fans observed that there was an ‘Om’ symbol on Keshav Maharaj’s bat.

For those who don’t know, Keshav Maharaj is Hindu by religion. He was born in 1990 in Durban to Atmanand and Kanchan Mala. His forefathers hailed from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, and arrived in Durban in 1874, according to Wikipedia.

Indians were pleased to see the ‘Om’ symbol on Keshav’s bat when he batted against the Dutch in Dharamsala. Fans praised the 33-year-old for remaining true to his roots of his ancestors and showing his gratitude toward god on the field, his arena of occupation.

Fans’ reaction on seeing ‘Om’ symbol on Keshav Maharaj’s bat:

Keshav Maharaj has taken 5 wickets in 3 matches so far in this World Cup.

South Africa, who had won their first two matches comfortably, succumbed to a shock defeat to the Netherlands on Tuesday in Dharamsala. This was South Africa’s first loss to an Associate country in the men’s ODI World Cup. This was Netherlands’ only third win in 23 matches at the men’s ODI World Cup.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma said the players are “hurt” by this loss.

“The guys have to find answers themselves and bounce back from here. You have to let the emotion sip in. It will hurt, and it should hurt, but we have get back into the journey. Our tournament is not finished,” Bavuma said of the loss.

He lavished praise on the Netherlands.

“It was a proper display from them. For them to come back from 112-6 to post a competitive score and then picking wickets. Good luck to them for the rest of the tournament.”
