[World Cup 2023] “Black Spot On Shakib Al Hasan’s Decorated Career…” – Mohammed Kaif

Mohammed Kaif Slammed Shakib Al Hasan: The cricketing world was left stunned after a controversy erupted during the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match. The biggest talking point of the innings was the ‘timed out’ dismissal of Angelo Mathews, who became the first batter in the history of international cricket to be deemed ‘Timed out’. The Sri Lankan batter was given out after he failed to be ready to take strike in the required time of 2 minutes, as his helmet strap broke for which he asked for help from the dressing room.

The incident took place on the second ball of the 25th over, bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan. Sadeera Samarawickrama had just been dismissed and Angelo Mathews arrived at the crease after the fall of the 4th wicket.

However, soon there was some confusion as Mathews realized that he had brought the wrong helmet and asked his teammates and the umpires. However, Shakib Al Hasan appealed for “Time Out”. Angelo Mathews was livid after the dismissal and threw away his helmet in frustration right after going out of the field of play.

[World Cup 2023] “Black Spot On Shakib Al Hasan’s Decorated Career..." - Mohammed Kaif

Meanwhile, the cricketing world has been divided into two parts over the debate on the “Spirit of Cricket”. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif didn’t hold back after Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by 3 wickets in the ICC World Cup 2023. Kaif was furious with Shakib al Hasan for the way he got rid of Angelo Mathews. Speaking on Star Sports, Kaif said:

It is a black spot on Shakib’s decorated career. He shouldn’t have appealed, as Mathews came at the crease on time. His strap came off, and this could happen to anyone. The umpires should have made the right decision by considering everything, but even they failed. I am disappointed with Shakib,”

Here’s What The Rule Says:

According to the MCC rules, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

The Cricket World Cup 2023 playing conditions about “timed out” dismissals reads: “40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

“This is the first time I have ever witnessed something like this,”
