Here’s Why Harsha Bhogle Is Not Happy With Yash Dhull’s Selection As Delhi Captain In Ranji Trophy

20-year-old Yash Dhull, who led the Indian cricket team to the Under-19 World Cup triumph earlier this year, has been named the captain of the Delhi Ranji team. Interestingly, IPL star Nitish Rana and India’s Test veteran Ishant Sharma are also featuring in the Delhi squad.

In all likelihood, Yash is one of the youngest players to have ever captained the Delhi team in the Ranji Trophy. Not just this, this will be his ninth First-Class game after a promising entry in the Ranji Trophy last year. So far, in the eight games, he has played in the Ranji Trophy, Dhull has amassed 820 runs at an average of 72 plus and has 4 centuries under his name.

It is understood that the DDCA officials wanted to make the captaincy transition from this season. All thanks to Dhull’s consistency with the bat and his leadership acumen, he has been given this opportunity.

“Somewhere we had to draw the line. We need to have a transition being carried out. Pradeep Sangwan, last year’s captain, had to be dropped as he hasn’t been measuring up,” a source close to the DDCA selection committee told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Currently, the squad has been picked for the first two games only (Delhi vs Maharashtra in Pune from December 13-17 and vs Assam, December 17-20).

Meanwhile, the appointment of 20-year-old Yash Dhull has brought mixed reactions from the Indian cricketing fraternity. Popular Indian commentator and analyst Harsha Bhogle also took to his social media and questioned why an inexperienced 20-year-old was named the captain of a Ranji Trophy team. Harsha feels that the young cricketer should be given a chance to grow his game. He wrote:

I wonder why you would want an inexperienced 20 year old to be captain of a Ranji Trophy team; especially a high profile team like Delhi? Wouldn’t Yash Dhull be better off just growing his game and adding to his undoubted ability?”
