6 Batsmen Who Have Hit A Century In ODI World Cup Final

On Sunday, in Ahmedabad, India and Australia will contest in what will be the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup final.

Both teams have been in sensational form. While India are undefeated in the World Cup 2023 so far, winning all 10 matches, Australia, who started with two losses, are now on an 8-match winning streak. The World Cup 2023 final promises to be an epic one between two of the greatest white-ball teams of all-time.

How many batsmen have hit a century in ODI World Cup final?

Over the past 12 men’s ODI World Cup finals, there have been only 6 batsmen who have hit a century.

West Indies won their first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979, both at Lord’s. In the 1975 final vs Australia, it was their skipper Clive Lloyd who scored 102, and in 1979 final against hosts England, it was Viv Richards who scored 138*, leading West Indies to victories.

There was no century in the 1983, 1987, and 1992 World Cup finals before Sri Lankan legendary Aravinda de Silva scored 107* against Australia in the 1996 ODI World Cup final in Lahore.

Adam Gilchrist, World Cup final

There was no hundred in the 1999 World Cup final, which Australia won. But Australia then had two centurions in the next two ODI World Cups final – Ricky Ponting smashing 140* against India in the 2003 final in Johannesburg and Adam Gilchrist thumping 149 against Sri Lanka in the 2007 final at Bridgetown.

Sri Lanka reached another final in 2011, and Mahela Jayawardene scored 103* against India at the Wankhede, but Sri Lanka lost the final. Interestingly, even as India have played 3 finals, no Indian is on this list. Even more interestingly, the last ODI World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019 were both centuryless, despite being in the modern white-ball era.
