Sourav Ganguly Revealed Why Rohit Sharma Is The Best Choice For ODI Captain: India’s sensational opener Rohit Sharma was recently named Team India’s new captain in limited-overs formats, and ever since then, the cricket fraternity chimed in with mixed reactions. While Virat Kohli himself decided to step down from the T20I captaincy after the T20I World Cup in UAE, he had expressed his desire to continue with ODI and Test captaincy, however, BCCI decided against that.

The BCCI handed over the captaincy reins of white-ball format to Rohit Sharma, in order to have two captains for two different formats — red-ball cricket and white-ball cricket. However, the timing of the call was questioned by the fans and experts alike. However, the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has backed the decision of the board and said that Rohit Sharma was the best choice for the role.

Speaking to popular sports journalist Boria Majumdar, on his show ‘Backstage with Boria’, Ganguly explained the reason behind the decision of the board. He said:

“He deserves that position because of what he has done as captain. Five titles with Mumbai, another one with Deccan Chargers speaks volume of his ability under pressure. Once Virat decided he doesn’t want to be part of T20 leadership, he was the best choice. He started well, beating NZ 3-0 in India. Hopefully, we will see a better result for India next year than what we saw this year,”

One of the big reasons behind Virat’s replacement was the fact that team India failed to win any major ICC trophy under his leadership. While Ganguly praised that India played well in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup but he also admitted that the team gave a dismaying performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2021.

Further, he also pointed how the team didn’t play to their absolute potential in the mega event. He said:

“To be honest, in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup, India was good. We were exceptional in the 2019 World Cup, one bad day, and our entire hard work of two months was wiped away. I was disappointed with the way we played this World Cup (T20 WC 2021). It was the poorest we played in the past 4-5 years.”

He added:

“I don’t know what happened, I felt we didn’t play with enough freedom. Sometimes, you just get stuck. The way we played against Pakistan and New Zealand, I felt we played with only 15 percent of the ability. Hopefully, we learn from it,”
