India vs Pakistan handshake controversy

The India vs Pakistan handshake controversy remains a heavy talking point in cricket after the high-tension Asia Cup 2025. After the Pahalgam terror attacks, the Indian team stuck to a strict no-contact policy that reflected the mood of the country.

This frostiness persisted through multiple tournaments, including the 2026 T20 World Cup, where Indian players again avoided the customary post-match greeting. Despite the competitive spirit on the grass, the lack of a simple physical gesture highlighted the deep diplomatic freeze between the two neighbours.

While India maintained on-field dominance with several victories, the social distance between the squads became a spectacle in its own right. Fans watched closely as the traditional spirit of the gentleman’s game took a backseat to political realities.

Salman reveals unexpected toss instructions

Speaking recently on a podcast, Salman Ali Agha explained that he felt completely relaxed before the initial toss because he had already shaken hands with the Indian captain during the pre-match press conference. He noted that the trophy photoshoot also included a friendly greeting, which led him to believe the actual match day would follow a standard routine.

However, the atmosphere shifted abruptly when he reached the middle of the stadium. Salman said the match referee pulled him aside to give him a heads-up about the protocol. The official told him flat out that the captains wouldn’t be shaking hands during the toss. Salman replied that he possessed no personal interest in forcing the gesture if the opposition preferred to avoid it.

The Pakistani squad faced a dressing room snub

The tension did not end with the flip of the coin, as the match concluded with more friction. Salman mentioned that even though they lost, the Pakistani players tried to keep things professional by heading toward the Indian pavilion. He wanted to make sure his team showed good sportsmanship by reaching out after the final ball.

Moving to the post-match scene, he claimed the Indian side still refused to participate in the exchange. Salman said he was disappointed with the policy, since he feels international cricketers should set an example for kids.

He worried that these cold interactions might lead to bad behaviour in local club cricket. These revelations continue to fuel the India vs Pakistan handshake controversy as fans debate the intersection of sports and politics.

“Before the match, there was a press conference and a trophy shoot, and there was a handshake there too. So when I was going for the toss, I was pretty normal. I said, “Obviously, I had an idea that things wouldn’t be normal.” Salman Ali Agha said.

“When I went for the toss, the match referee took me aside and said, “Friend, this handshake will not happen like this, so please see to it.” I said I have also not interest in shaking hands.” he added.

“They told me in advance that there was no handshake, and after that, the match ended. We lost, and we were heading to his pavilion for a handshake. They still didn’t shake hands.” he concluded. – Salman Ali Agha finallly breaks silence on the no-handshake controversy with India.
