Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been getting criticism from all corners after India’s heartbreaking exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. Team India ended their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign after suffering a big 10-wicket defeat at the hands of England. India finished as the top-placed side in group 2. There were high expectations from the Indian cricket team going into the semi-final, however, the Indian side failed against England and suffered a 10-wicket defeat while defending a target of 169.
Following the semi-final defeat, the PTI reported that there will be a new team in place for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Not just this, several experts and former cricketers have come out with their opinions on who should be India’s next T20I captain and many of them have backed India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the job.
Hardik Pandya has proven his credentials as he led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in its first appearance. Hardik carried on with the same work on the Indian side as he made a solid return to the national side. His leadership skill was put to test in a two-match T20I series in Ireland. He came out with flying colors with a 2-0 sweep.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has come out in support of Hardik Pandya to take up the T20I captaincy. He said: “I think he (Hardik Pandya) should be the next India captain as far as T20I format is concerned,”
Hardik Pandya will be seen leading the Indian cricket team in the three-match T20I series in New Zealand that is set to begin on November 18. The likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Dinesh Karthik have all been rested from that tour.
Speaking about the same, Gavaskar said: “You will probably see in the next few games that there will be a (change) after the New Zealand tour particularly. You know that the teams have been selected right till the end of the Bangladesh tour. So there won’t be any change till the New Year. So if any change has to happen it will happen in the domestic international season,”
