After India’s loss in the first Test against England, pacer Jasprit Bumrah faced official reprimand from the ICC for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the match in Hyderabad.

Bumrah’s breach pertained to Article 2.12, which addresses “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

When did the incident between Jasprit Bumrah and Ollie Pope happen in the first Test?

The incident involving Bumrah and Pope unfolded in the 81st over of England’s second innings during the first Test. It occurred in the latter stages of the match, with Bumrah obstructing Ollie Pope’s path while running between the wickets, resulting in an avoidable collision.

Bumrah managed to take four wickets in the second innings and eventually dismissed Pope. Pope’s outstanding innings of 196, setting a new record, played a pivotal role in England’s ultimate victory.

As per the ICC’s Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, the violation of Article 2.12 means:

“Any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, Players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another Player or Umpire. When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (i.e. intentional), reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) the force of the contact; (iii) any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made; and (iv) the person with whom contact was made.”
