The Indian batters went all over the place in the second innings and thanks to some late fight from KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin that India managed to score 202 in the second innings against England. Shubman Gill who has advocated to bat at number three continued to fail with very limited returns.
What exactly has gone wrong for the Prince? We believe that he has completely lost the plot at number three and if he has to come back to his peak, he needs to get back to the opening slot or maybe dropped to accommodate a few bigger names in the process. Here are three reasons why Shubman Gill should be dropped from the Test series against England.
#1 Gill is going away from his natural game
Ideally, Shubman Gill is an extremely attacking batter and when he opens the innings he is someone who very convincingly deals with the new ball. For a batter who is so good at dealing with a ball that moves and bends, for him number three should be relatively easier. However, somehow, he is trying too hard to accommodate himself and in the process he is throwing his wicket away. The harder you try to accommodate a different kind of game for yourself, you dig a greater hole.
#2 Shubman Gill is starting to be afraid
If there is one particular thing that made Shubman Gill stand out that was his fearlessness. However, with lack of runs and the kind of difficulties for Gill rising, the Prince is now scared and when you are afraid, half of your strokes go down the drain. This is the scariest part for Shubman Gill and unless he is able to batten up his hatches, things will look even scarier.
#3 There are other stars in queue
It is understandable that Shubman Gill has been one of the most prolific run-scorers for India in recent times but then that being said, if he is unable to contribute and India is unable to accommodate him in the opening slot, then it is expected that the stars who have been grinding themselves out in the domestic circuit and the other tournaments should also get a chance. Hence, it is advisable that Shubman Gill takes a backseat for this series.
