Joe Root was livid with himself after being dismissed – or rather, one would say, throwing away his wicket – in England’s first innings of the Rajkot Test as Jasprit Bumrah got him for the 9th time in Test cricket. Given how Bazball works, it’s difficult to say whether Joe Root was unhappy with himself for playing the reverse ramp or for not executing it properly.
Nonetheless, it took a brilliant reflexive catch from young Yashasvi Jaiswal at second slip to seal Root’s wicket.
The critics will surely come out popping as Joe Root threw away a big opportunity to get back into form and pile up a big score in this series as the pitch in Rajkot still is good for batting, dismissed for only 18 runs. But England have allowed India to crawl back into the game in the morning of Day 3 as Jonny Bairstow too followed Root to the dressing room for a duck.
It was a length delivery outside the off-stump and Joe Root had already premeditated his famous reverse-ramp or reverse-scoop. He failed to connect it properly as he went through with the shot. The ball flew to Jaiswal at second slip and the youngster took a superb, sharp catch, though with a little juggle, showing his quick reflexes.
Root screamed into his helmet as he walked back while India celebrated their breakthrough early in the morning session.

Joe Root vs Jasprit Bumrah in Tests:
21 innings
254 runs
9 dismissals
Avg 28.22
Meanwhile, India have rocked back into the game with three big wickets in the morning session. And that is despite not having R Ashwin available as the off-spinner, who dismissed Zak Crawley yesterday to take his 500th Test wicket, has left for home due to a family medical emergency.
After Root’s dismissal, Kuldeep Yadav struck twice with the wickets of Bairstow for a duck and Ben Duckett for 153. Ben Stokes, at the other end, is looking dangerous and has hit four boundaries so far.
