Suryakumar Yadav led India to back-to-back T20 World Cup glory, but his future remains uncertain
After Rohit Sharma retired from T20 internationals following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, the selectors appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the side’s new captain. It was a move that caught many off guard, as Hardik Pandya was the clear favourite for the job. But the gamble paid off.
Under his leadership, India played 52 T20 matches, winning 42 and losing just 8. They even secured the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title by beating New Zealand in the final. This made India the first team ever to win consecutive T20 World Cups. Suryakumar’s side also became the first to win the trophy three times. He currently holds a win percentage of 80.76 as captain, which is a record that actually tops what both Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni achieved in the T20 World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir backs Suryakumar, but selectors aren’t fully sold
Even with that impressive record, the question of who should lead India next has split the top brass of Indian cricket. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is reportedly looking for a contract extension through the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia, wants Suryakumar Yadav to stay on as captain.
While Gambhir is sticking by his man, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is being much more careful. A BCCI source confirmed that while Suryakumar will lead the team during the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, any decision about his future leading up to 2028 will depend entirely on how he performs.
The main issue for the selectors is Suryakumar’s batting. He had a rough 2025, scoring only 218 runs in 19 innings with a low average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16. He did find some form during the 2026 T20 World Cup, ending with 242 runs from nine games, but his performances in the semifinal and final, where he made 11 and 0, kept the critics talking even as the team celebrated the win. With Suryakumar turning 38 by the time the 2028 LA Olympics come around, the Agarkar-led committee is hesitant to commit to him for the long haul.
Shreyas Iyer emerges as the strongest rival for the armband

While Gambhir wants to keep things as they are, others in the Indian cricket circle are pointing toward Shreyas Iyer as the next logical choice. Iyer hasn’t been in the T20I squad since December 2023, but his success in the IPL, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 title and taking Punjab Kings to the 2025 final, has shown he is one of the smartest tactical leaders in the country.
Former India wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa has already called for Iyer to get the job, and many analysts see him as the best fit to lead India through the LA Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup. Axar Patel, who was vice-captain during the 2026 World Cup, is still in the mix, but few people at the BCCI see him as a serious full-time candidate. Sanju Samson is also a new name in the mix after being named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 World Cup, especially given his long stint captaining the Rajasthan Royals.
Not Good For India’s T20I Captain – BCCI’s Big Warning To Suryakumar Yadav Amidst IPL 2026
The 2026 IPL, which is happening right now, is essentially an unofficial trial. Selectors are keeping a close eye on how Iyer, Samson, and the others lead their teams. What happens in the next few weeks could quietly decide what the BCCI isn’t saying yet: who will take over the T20I captaincy after the England tour.
