After Rohit Sharma retired from T20 internationals, the BCCI made Suryakumar Yadav the permanent captain of the T20I side in July 2024. From day one, he took the job seriously. Since taking over, he has led India to series wins in Sri Lanka and South Africa, along with a dominant run at home against England, and he led the team to the Asia Cup 2025 title.
The numbers speak for themselves. Suryakumar Yadav has a win percentage of 80.95% after 44 matches, higher than Rohit Sharma‘s 79.33%. Then came the big one as India won the 2026 T20 World Cup by beating New Zealand in the final, making Suryakumar the third Indian captain to lift the trophy. He joined MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in that elite group, something few would have predicted for a man who only made his T20I debut in March 2021.
The BCCI’s warning to Suryakumar Yadav and his 2026 stats
Despite all those trophies, there is some serious talk happening behind closed doors at the BCCI. According to a BCCI source speaking to PTI anonymously, Suryakumar will lead the side in the upcoming T20Is in the UK, but his captaincy through 2028 depends entirely on how he performs. The main worry is his batting.
“Obviously, Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that, as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK, but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Suryakumar Yadav had a rough run in 2025, scoring just 218 runs from 19 innings at an average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16. His T20 World Cup 2026 numbers weren’t great either. Across nine innings in the tournament, he scored 242 runs at an average of 30.25, with a highest score of 84 not out against the USA, his only fifty of the event.
The knock against USA was a highlight, where he scored 84 runs off 49 balls and reached 1,000 T20I runs as a captain, winning Player of the Match. Yet, aside from that innings, his contributions in the knockouts were mostly quiet. As for IPL 2026, Suryakumar Yadav has managed just 73 runs in three innings at an average of 24.33 and a strike rate of 155.32 for Mumbai Indians so far. For a batter of his class, those numbers are a red flag, and clearly, the BCCI selectors are worried.
Who steps in if Suryakumar Yadav loses the captaincy?
The talk about who comes next feels both inevitable and interesting. Sanju Samson finished the T20 World Cup 2026 with 321 runs in five innings at an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37, earning the Player of the Tournament award. His performances in knockout matches made a strong case for him to lead, and a former cricketer, Mohammad Kaif publicly backed him as a future leader.
Jasprit Bumrah also remains an option as a natural leader on the pitch, while Shubman Gill, already India’s Test and ODI captain, represents the BCCI’s plan to have one captain for all formats.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, and Ishan Kishan, who captained Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, are also in the mix. IPL 2026 is basically an audition, with selectors watching every move. Suryakumar Yadav is still determined, as he has spoken about aiming for Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 2028, but the BCCI has made clear that the captaincy depends on current form, not past trophies.
