India consigned to record loss by England in Bumrah’s captaincy debut

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah’s India Test captaincy debut ended in disappointment as they were thrashed by England by 7 wickets in Edgbaston, which meant that the five-Test series from last year ended in a draw 2-2 and England retained the Pataudi Trophy.

Given a target of 378, England gunned it down in 76.4 overs, scoring at a run rate of 4.96 to register their highest successful chase in Test cricket. Also, this was the highest target India have failed to defend in their history.
Speaking after the loss, Bumrah lamented India’s batting malfunction in the second innings – when the visitors lost their last 7 wickets for 92 runs.

“I think yesterday [Monday], we fell short with the bat, and we had to come back with the ball. That is the phase where we let the opposition in, and the momentum kept shifting away from us,” Bumrah said.

“We were even going ahead in the game, but they kept on fighting, and they played better than us in the second innings and won the game.”

The white-ball series – 3 T20Is followed by 3 ODIs – will kick off on July 7 and India will have skipper Rohit Sharma back.
