Prithvi Shaw Is Getting Slammed: 41-time Ranji Trophy champions couldn’t make it 42 this time – as they lost to a spirited Madhya Pradesh team in the final on Sunday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. MP chased down the target of 108 in the fourth innings in the second session of Day 5 to clinch their maiden Ranji Trophy title.

Mumbai had to grind hard in the field for 177 overs as MP piled up 536 in their first innings in reply to Mumbai’s 374 and took a first-innings lead.

Amid this tempers flared as Mumbai skipper Prithvi Shaw got into a heated argument with the on-field umpires, KN Anantha Padmanabhan and Virender Sharma.

Prithvi Shaw unhappy with on-field umpire’s decision

In the 125th over of MP’s innings, a delivery from Mohit Avasthi struck MP skipper Aditya Shrivastava on his pad as he lunged forward. The whole Mumbai team vociferously appealed for an LBW decision but umpire Virender Sharma stood still because the impact was outside off. This left close-in fielders Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan in disbelief.

After the end of the over, Shaw was seen having an animated discussion with both on-field umpires. Shaw was clearly unhappy and frustrated with the decision and had a heated debate with the umpires who explained to him that there shouldn’t be a need for any such chats when and after the decision has been made.

To note is that there was no DRS in the game as the BCCI decided against using the technology, despite this being the final of the Ranji Trophy.

Fans slammed 23-year-old Shaw for his behaviour on Twitter:

Hopeless attitude…! Play 3-4 IPL games and don the disrespectful attitude forever….! https://t.co/iPQ8vtJs0r

Mumbai were rampant throughout the league stage and in the knockouts and some are even terming this loss as an upset. Shaw lauded the efforts put in by his players and credited MP for their maiden win. The Mumbai skipper also admitted to not being able to bat for longer.

“I think the way the boys have played it is unbelievable. Lot of youngsters and new guys showed character and showed what Mumbai cricket is all about. Every day can’t be your day, MP guys batted and bowled well. We can learn from this and move forward. If you ask personally I could have batted longer, there will be ups and downs in cricket. All my focus was on what I can do better for the boys and team, surely will come back stronger next year,” Shaw said at the post-match presentation.
