It is a known secret that the Indian Cricket team was very reliant on MS Dhoni in terms of taking the DRS calls and challenging the on-field umpires’ decision. The veteran wicket-keeper was spot on with his referrals as he made the most of the unique angle he got from behind the stumps. However, Dhoni has been away from the cricket field ever since the Men in Blue’s 2019 World Cup semifinal loss against New Zealand last July.
He has not announced his retirement but there is a huge amount of uncertainty that looms around his future. Dhoni has ensured the fans that he will play in IPL 2020 which means that he may soon return to the Indian side as well. But, in his absence, Yuzvendra Chahal seems to have taken up the role of calling the DRS. The Indian leg-spinner showcased his smartness with a witty call in the second ODI match between New Zealand and India.
During the 3rd over of the match, Shardul Thakur bowled a fine good pitched delivery which directly hit the pads of Martin Guptill. The Indian players went for the appeal and the bowler was overjoyed as he felt that he had got his man. The umpire did not raise his finger as he declared Guptill not out. Looking at the confidence in Thakur’s appeal, it seemed like Virat Kohli would ask for a review. He was about to challenge the decision when Chahal denied him to do so. The leg-spinner from Haryana pointed out that there was an inside edge.
The players then dispersed and soon, the replays indicated that there was an inside edge on that delivery. Thus, Chahal saved the review of the visitors with his sharp eyes. Ultimately, Guptill went on to score a half-century as his brilliant innings helped New Zealand win the match and take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the 3-match ODI series.
