Here’s The Truth Behind India’s Controversial Reaction On DRS

Here’s The Truth Behind India’s Controversial Reaction On DRS: A huge controversy sparked on Day 3 of the Cape Town Test that left India captain Virat Kohli and other team members furious to an extent that the players alleged manipulating by broadcasters SuperSport.

In the 21st over of South Africa’s second innings – the final innings of the match – Protea skipper Dean Elgar for given out lbw by umpire Marais Erasmus off Ravichandran Ashwin.

What looked like a plumb dismissal displayed shocking results on HawkEye after Elgar reviewed the umpire’s decision. A ball that drifted in from Ashwin hit Elgar in front of the stumps, and below his knee roll. But, HawkEye showed that the ball was going over the leg stump, forcing the umpire to change his decision.

The Indians were in shock seeing the ball go over the stumps; it was not even clipping or umpire’s call. Missing was the final verdict from technology.

A fuming Virat Kohli hit the turf with his leg in sheer shock and disappointment. The Indina then let their frustrations known to the broadcaster, SuperSport.

Kohli then walked up to the stumps, and spoke into the mic, saying, “Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.”

Vice-captain KL Rahul was heard saying,
“It’s the whole country against 11 guys.” And Ashwin took a dig straightaway at the broadcaster.
“You should find better ways to win, SuperSport,” the off-spinner said.
Even umpire Erasmus could be seen shaking his head and was heard saying,
“That’s impossible”.

For the unversed, the ball-tracking technology is authorised by HawkEye, an independent body, which relays the data to the host broadcaster, in this case SuperSport.

A lot has been since spoken about the efficiency of technology, and also the behaviour of the Indian players, in particular the skipper.

Paras Mhambrey, the bowling coach, said this in his press conference:
“We saw it, you saw it. I’ll leave that for the match referee to have a look at it. There’s nothing I can comment on it now. We’ve seen it all, just want to move on with the game now.”

The Indians can’t allow themselves to take their eye off the ball, for they have a Test match and a series on line.
In chase of 212, South Africa have lost Aiden Markram for 16 before a 78-run stand between Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen frustrated India further. Elgar was finally dismissed for 30 by Jasprit Bumrah in the last over of the day. South Africa need 111 more runs to clinch the Test and the series, while India require 8 wickets.
