There is no question in the truth that India’s Test captain, Virat Kohli, has suffered an unexpected dip in his form, especially in the longest format. And the criticism has been piling with every non-significant score.
Since the start of 2020, Virat Kohli, who once used to score runs with utter ease, has managed to register 681 runs in 15 Tests, at a below-standard average of 27. His century drought has extended to more than two years, with the last of his 70 international tons coming in November 2019.
He has been getting out chasing, and edging the deliveries outside off-stump as he did in 2014 and has failed to remove that chink. That has kept the fans and experts wondering whether Kohli is on a decline as a batter, and perhaps if we had seen the best of him before his lean phase.
Unsurprisingly, a huge amount of scrutiny, doubts, questions, and criticism have followed the ‘King’. More so in the past year when the likes of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma have been India’s best batters.
The question about his own form was raised ahead of the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. While Kohli gave a detailed explanation about his mindset in dealing with this period, he attested that he isn’t much worried about his form, and that he has made notable contributions in the last two years that the stats don’t reflect.
“…the reality of the situation is that you eventually want to make impact performances for the team, and my best effort is always to do that, and I truly believe that I don’t need to prove anything to anyone,” the Indian Test skipper said.
Fans were quick to point out that this phrase, though, was frequently used by former captain MS Dhoni. Netizens rapidly remembered that Dhoni had said a similar line following India’s 2013 Champions Trophy win in England.
With that began the trolling of Virat Kohli where some Twitter users pointed out that Kohli has, indeed, been in a slump and really needs to put up a big score to continue with his legacy.
