The Australian cricket team lifted their maiden World Cup trophy after defeating Kane Williamson led New Zealand in the final clash of the T20 World Cup 2021, on Sunday. Aaron Finch and Co. gave a clinical performance as they dominated the New Zealand cricket team despite an exceptional batting effort from the NZ skipper Kane Williamson.

After the match, speaking at the post-match presentation, Kane Williamson talked about the defeat and said that it was a shame they couldn’t get the job done in the final clash. Williamson said that the team walked into the tournament with high hopes and even went on to play some good cricket throughout the tournament but couldn’t go all the way. He said:
“Guys committed to what we tried to do in venues that varied a lot. There was a lot of heart shown, always nice to get to the big dance. But credit to Australia. Some high hopes coming in, some good cricket played, so we’re feeling it a bit. There are only two possible outcomes, shame we couldn’t get the job done.”
Williamson played a stunning knock of 85 runs to take his team to 172 runs after a slow start in the final clash against Australia, leading his team from the front. Speaking about the batting efforts of his side, Kane said:
“With the start, we were looking to set a platform. The surface was slightly holding a fraction. It was nice to be able to build some partnerships to get to what we thought was a competitive total at the halfway stage.”

He also heaped praises on the way Australians chased down the target scores, saying that the Aaron Finch-led side didn’t give them an inch. He said:
“It was chased superbly by Australia. They are a great side and had a brilliant campaign. You never really know, but at halfway we made every effort to get a good total. The guys came out and committed to the plans. We weren’t far away. Having said that, credit to the way Australia chase it, they didn’t give us an inch,”
He concluded by saying that he is proud of the way his team operated throughout the tournament. He said:
“We tried to make it difficult but it wasn’t to be today, but proud of how we’ve operated.”
