Gautam Gambhir is one of the most gutsy Indian batsmen ever. He is widely regarded as a ‘big match player’ because of his ability to back his natural game and deliver at the big stage. However, if we talk about the current scenario, it is highly unlikely that Gautam Gambhir will make a comeback to Indian cricket team.
From the last couple of years, Gautam Gambhir has been trying his best at the domestic level to score runs and push the selectors but he hasn’t tasted much success. He played one Test in the grand home season 2016/17 but many believe that the southpaw didn’t get a fair run to prove his worth again.

Considering the current scenario, Gambhir has decided to step down as Delhi state’s captain and Ishant Sharma has been named as the new leader of Delhi. This is the first time Ishant, 29, has been entrusted with the leadership of the side. The biggest reason behind this decision by Gambhir is to enjoy his batting and groom someone who can lead Delhi in the long run.
Ishant has played 77 Tests for India and this is the reason why DDCA officials felt that he is the best man for the job.
“He is the senior-most man in the team,” the official told ESPNcricinfo.”
“Also, we felt it was better to have a bowler as captain. Over the years, many international sides, too, have had success with bowlers as captains, like Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, so we wanted to have a man who understood the bowlers’ perspective.”
The chairman of DDCA’s selection committee said that the officials want Gautam Gambhir to focus only on his batting.
“We just wanted another role for Gambhir” Wassan told ESPNcricinfo.
“We wanted him to concentrate more [on his batting] and he also wanted more responsibility as a batsman, so we just wanted a change. So, it’s not like we have removed him. He was our first choice [as captain].
“We wanted to groom Ishant and Gambhir suggested this was the way forward. We are all on the same page,” Atul Wassan said.
