Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan recently appeared on a chat show on Youtube with Gaurav Kapoor and spoke about the similarities between the captaincy style of Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. Zaheer Khan plate a lot of his cricket with both the former Indian skipper and he is the right man to talk about the similarities and differences between the two.
Talking about Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy style, Zaheer Khan said that Dada always offered all the support players needed from him.
“That’s (support from Ganguly) what you need at that stage of your career. When you start at the international level, you need all the support. Then it is up to you as to how you shape up your career. But that initial support is extremely vital,” Zaheer Khan said.
Talking about MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan said that MS Dhoni also played a similar role in nurturing young talent and he spent a similar kind of role to what Sourav Ganguly did with the then young lot of players.
“When MS got the team, there were a lot of experienced players in the side, so he did not have to do too much to get them up to speed. However, once they started retiring, he then had to nurture the young match. He had spent a similar kind of role and done similar things to what Dada (Ganguly) did with the young crop. This is the quality of the leader to take the team forward,” Zaheer added.
“In Indian cricket, every decade the captain has passed the baton to the next in line and the person who has taken the baton has led to the team to the next level,” Zaheer Khan further said.
It was a great conversation between Gaurav Kapoor and Zaheer Khan, as the former Indian speedster spoke very candidly throughout the show. You can watch the video, here:
