Former Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra’s contribution to the Indian cricket team has been huge. He has given many memorable moments to the cricket fans during his glorious career of 18 years. From him giving an award to Virat Kohli during his childhood days to him abusing MS Dhoni, there have been iconic moments involving Ashish Nehra.
Talking about the latter one, this moment is still afresh in the minds of every cricket fan. For the unversed, this moment took place in 2005 during the game against Pakistan in Ahmedabad. Pakistan cricket team was chasing a total of 316 runs to level the series when Ashish Nehra had created a chance to dismiss Shahid Afridi.
Shahid Afridi had edged the ball and it would go between Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni. However, they lost the chance and Ashish Nehra was seen abusing MS Dhoni in utter disappointment.
Recently, Ashish Nehra recalled the incident and admitted that he isn’t proud of his behavior. He said:
“In a video that went viral, I am seen hurling abuses at MS after an edge off Shahid Afridi’s bat goes between Dhoni and Rahul Dravid at first slip. People assume it’s from the Vizag match, but that incident is from the fourth ODI in Ahmedabad. However, I must admit I am not proud of my behaviour.”
He added:
“I had been hit for six by Afridi off just the previous ball. There was the usual pressure of an India-Pakistan match. Suddenly, I created a chance and it was missed. I lost my cool. That wasn’t the only incident where a player has lost his cool in that manner. Both Dravid and Dhoni were fine with me after the game but that doesn’t justify my behaviour,”
Ashish Nehra further went on to say that a day will come that his kids will watch this video and he will have to explain his behavior to them. He said:
“The video is still popular because it has Dhoni in it. It’s like that old picture of me presenting an award to Virat Kohli when he was a kid. The picture is famous because it has Kohli in it, not because of me. I know someday my kids will eventually watch that video clip and I’ll have to explain why I behaved that way!”
