“Ooooooohhhh” Went all the three commentators in the commentary box just as Liam Livingstone struck a perfectly reasonable delivery from Mohammed Shami. “My word. No. Never,” a shocked Pommie Mbangwa tried finding words. “It’s out of the stadium,” he added, followed by Graeme Swann saying, “That is a monster; that’s one of the biggest sixes I’ve ever seen.”
The camera quickly turned to Punjab Kings‘ captain Mayank Agarwal in the dugout who had his clenched fist on his gaping mouth, just left stunned, and so was the crowd. Shami, the bowler, impressed and could only manage a smile looking at one of Gujarat Titans‘ fielders as if yielding to the English maverick. 117 metres! ONE HUNDRED SEVENTEEN metres!
27 runs were needed off the last 5 overs when Liam Livingstone came into bat, having got the permission of skipper Agarwal who had taken a demotion to number 4 in order to get the struggling Jonny Bairstow at the top.
Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa had made the chase of 144 fairly easy with their 87-run stand in 59 balls. Liam Livingstone had asked Agarwal whether he could go next; the skipper said only if Rajapaksa, the aggressor, gets out otherwise he’d himself go in if Dhawan is dismissed to play the anchor role.
Well, for what was to come – mayhem – Gujarat, and Shami, would have preferred to have got rid of Dhawan instead of Rajapaksa. Enter Livingstone, who had already been having his best IPL season.
The right-hander was 2 from 4 balls and with five overs to go and 27 runs required from them, it was a good chance for Punjab to up their net run rate. The Englishman did exactly that – well, he didn’t take more than over to complete the remaining runs from the chase as Shami ran into a rampant Livingstone who just clattered all of his deliveries taking 28 runs from the over.

After the earth-shattering 117-metre gigantic six on the leg-side, Shami was rattled and didn’t have any answers; he sent down an innocuous full toss which Livingstone deposited for another maximum. Regaining himself, Shami went short, but this is Livingstone’s day – his fierce pull shot taking a top edge and flying over the wicket-keeper for a third six over the over.
Next, an attempted slower ball was flicked over square leg, followed by a couple of runs, and Livingstone finished the chase with another boundary.
“Swinging hard enough. I didn’t think I was going to bat at one point, nice to go out and hit a few out the middle,” that’s a bit modest from Livingstone. “I thought Shikhar played beautifully to set it up, and Bhanu with that partnership. It was a big win for us and we needed it, we have played some bad cricket in the last couple of games and it is nice to turn it around. I went up to Mayank and said I fancy going in before you and he said you go in if Bhanu gets out and I go in if Shikhar gets out.”
Netizens couldn’t believe what Liam Livingstone is made up of. One of the cleanest and most powerful strikers of the cricket ball sent Twitter into pandemonium once again.
Here are some of the reactions to Livingstone’s crazy takedown of Mohammed Shami:
Liam Livingstone finishes with 6,6,6,4,2,4. What a knock, he smashed a 117M six as well.

Liam Livingstone is low-key having a Dre-Russesque season. Easily amongst the most powerful and aesthetic six hitters I’ve ever seen.

This love story between one of the cleanest, fearsome hitters and the IPL needs to blossom soon..#IPL2022 #KKRvsPBKS— Jatin Khandelwal (@jr_khandelwal) April 1, 2022
Well at least today he got out on a big boundary shot and Shami is in superb form with new ball; Punjab shouldn’t mind that much..should give him couple of more games at the top https://t.co/CtOg8ks0Md
