IPL 2022: A Stat That Proves Sanju Samson Is A Beast Against Spinners

Sanju Samson has unbelievable numbers against spin: Rajasthan Royals have made an early bid for being the title contenders for IPL 2022 – 14 seasons after they won the first IPL title – having now emerged victorious in 4 of their 6 matches so far, pushing them up to the second spot in the points table.

While Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult and Shimron Hetmyer have been the key contributors to their victories, skipper Sanju Samson has also garnered a lot of applause for his leadership and also for his batsmanship in the middle overs.

Sanju Samson has so far has scored 155 runs at an ordinary average of 25, but his strike rate of 158 suggests that the RR skipper has looked to force the issue in the middle-overs when the spinners are on; this has worked out well for RR given Buttler has looked to bat for long enough while others around him have the license to go after the opposition’s spinners.

IPL 2022: A Stat That Proves Sanju Samson Is A Beast Against Spinners

Sanju Samson is among the rare batters who have a thrilling combination of class and power with an immense gift of timing. He is adept in smacking the pacers, but is amongst the elite when it comes to mauling the spinners, especially down the ground.

A stat put out on Twitter by a gentleman named Rohit Sankar shows how outrageously good Sanju Samson has been while looking to loft the slower bowlers down the ground in the V.

“An insane stat on Sanju Samson His success rate when lofting in the V vs spin is brilliant. Since 2020 in IPL 35 attempted shots, 24 6s 162 runs 1 dismissal 462.8 SR,” Sankar tweeted.

The SR is huge, but a really high SR is expected with the loft. What’s amazing is he’s only been dismissed once attempting it and that he’s hit 68.5% of them for sixes.

Sanju Samson was in praise for his team after RR registered a close 7-run win over KKR. Despite having put up 217 on the board, RR came close to throwing it away and breathed a sigh of relief only when KKR were bowled out.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Samson said: “(On the match getting tense) Yeah, it did. That’s about IPL, the quality of players and team — it was an interesting game. It is important to stay calm when it gets tense. Our team just did that. (On slowing the game down) There are some things that are needed to be used at the right time. You need to slow down the momentum sometimes.

“I respect KKR. They are a solid team. Chasing second and at CCI — anything is chaseable. I thought they were in the game. (On Jos and Yuzi) I don’t think, I need to talk about them. The entire world saw them do what they did. That special ball from R Ashwin to Russell was special. Absolutely, Obed looks interesting. He doesn’t talk much but gives the feeling that he is composed and knows a lot about the game.”
