Mumbai Indians’ new young batting sensation Dewald Brevis has taken on the IPL with his stunning knocks so far in the IPL 2022. In 4 innings, the 18-year-old has smashed 117 runs; his strike rate of 172 is the best for any Mumbai Indians batsman this season who has scored at least 50 runs.
Brevis has been a bright positive in what has been a disappointing campaign for the five-time champions as they have now slipped to their sixth defeat in as many matches and remain the only side without a single victory.
Dewald Brevis has been dubbed ‘Baby AB’ due to his technical similarities to South African legend AB de Villiers. Brevis has spent a considerable amount of time learning the game from the former Protea captain.
He revealed that AB de Villiers has been a crucial mentor in his cricketing journey, who has taught him not only about the batting art, but also about the mindset needed to succeed in big tournaments such as the IPL.
“He’s played a big role, it’s a special relationship. He teaches me small things that helps me a lot. It’s about my mindset, the way to play the game & tells me to keep it simple with thinking about the game and also with small technical things which he helps me a lot with. Playing with aggression is important but also to just keep calm in certain situations and to now see how next game goes,” Brevis said in a pre-match chat with broadcasters ahead of the match against Lucknow Super Giants.
In his third IPL match, Brevis announced his arrival by walloping the in-form Punjab leggie Rahul Chahar for four consecutive monstrous sixes, including one that measured a staggering 112 metres.
“I really enjoyed it a lot and just try to learn from everyone and try to play fearless out there and play smart cricket. It just happened (against Chahar), I knew my strengths and when I see the ball, they just took over,” Dewald Brevis said.
Dewald Brevis whacked 49 in 25 balls vs Punjab and followed it up with 31 runs off just 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants to further showcase his talent.
