The Indian Premier League (IPL 2017) is arguably the most extravagant domestic T20 league in the world. Over the years, we have seen many new technologies being introduced in THE tournament, and this is one of the reasons why it is a huge hit among people of all age groups. From ‘VIP boxes’ to spider cam, broadcasters and organisers have used many techniques to make the game even more interesting for the viewers.

In the ongoing tenth edition of the Indian Premier League, a new feature has been added to the digital scoreboard that is displayed on television screens.

If you observe closely, there is a ticker, just below the score, that keeps changing its colour from green to red and vice-versa. Now, if you have played EA Sports Cricket, you would relate it to timing of the shot or the speed of the delivery. But, no, it isn’t about that.

During the match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, commentator Danny Morrison talked about the significant of the ticker.

What is the ticker all about?

The ticker is divided into two parts; the left side is red in colour and the right side is green. The mid-point signifies that the team is at par with the required run rate. Whereas, the left and right side signify below or ahead respectively.

For example, if a team requires 100 runs to win in 10 overs i.e. 10 runs per over and they are scoring at 7 runs per over, then the ticker will turn red because the team is scoring less than what it is required to win. Similarly, if the chasing team is scoring at 11 runs per over, the ticker will turn green.

So, the magnitude of red and green colour will signify how far or ahead the chasing the team of required run rate.
