MS Dhoni can break three more records against New Zealand in October

India’s limited-overs captain MS Dhoni is on a rest, as India’s Test side, captained by Virat Kohli, is in West Indies for a four-match Test series. Dhoni, who announced his retirement from Test cricket to focus more on limited-overs cricket, has played the most number of matches, across all three formats, for India in the last 10 years or so. Dhoni led a young Indian side to a series win against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe last month and now he is on a break from international cricket till October. MS Dhoni’s next assignment will commence in October with New Zealand’s visit to India for a five-match ODI series.

But, when Dhoni will take on New Zealand in October, he will have a chance to break three more records. Here are the three records India’s inspirational leader is on the verge of shattering:

  • Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni are currently tied for most international matches played by captain. Both, Dhoni and Ponting, have lead their respective countries in 324 games.
  • MS Dhoni needs one more win to become the second most successful One Day International (ODI) captain in cricket history. Here as well, Ricky Ponting leads the list with 165 victories, MS Dhoni and Alan Border have both won 107 matches as captains of their respective teams.
  • Again, it’s Australia’s Ponting who holds the record for most ODI sixes (123) as captain. Dhoni, at 121, needs just three more sixes to go past him.
