Part-timer JP Duminy became the first South African bowler to take a hat-trick in a World Cup game. Duminy, who bowls gentle off-spinners, dismissed Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Kulasekara and debutant Tharindu Kaushal and became the second spinner after Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq to take a World Cup hat-trick.

Duminy dismisse Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews on the last ball of the 33rd over. And in the first two balls off his next over, Duminy dismissed Kulasekara and Kaushal. First Kulasekara edged a flighted to the keeper and then Kaushal was trapped in front of the stumps.

Not many in the stadium reailsed that Duminy had taken a hat-trick, but a quick glance at the scoreboard suddenly made those at the ground — including the television commentators — realise that in fact Duminy had taken a hat-trick.

Duminy celebrated his hat-trick by leaping into the air and punching it with delight. JP Duminy became just the second South African to take a one-day international hat-trick and the first to do so at a World Cup.
