Despite having played Rashid Khan a lot in the nets, Matthew Short had no idea of the leg-spinner’s vicious googly when they met in the IPL 2023 match between the PBKS and the (GT) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.
Rashid Khan and Matt Short have played the past few seasons together for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL. Short, who was roped in by PBKS as an injury replacement player of Jonny Bairstow, has faced the Afghanistan superstar spinner tons of times in the nets.
However, GT Spinner was able to outfox, and in some style in the first clash in the IPL 2023.
In his second IPL game of the season, Short was going nicely, having taken boundaries of both Mohammed Shami and Alzarri Joseph. By the end of the powerplay, Short was 35(22) and had taken Punjab to 52.

However, in the 7th over, straight after the powerplay, Rashid was introduced and the leg-spinner castled Short with a terrific googly which the right-handed batter failed to read.
It was a length delivery from Khan that turned in sharply. Short, who didn’t offer to come on the front foot and stayed back, looked to play it through the covers and missed it completely. By the time he realized that he’d missed the ball, his stumps were in a mess and GT Turner was off in his celebration in his trademark airplane style. Since it was his BBL teammate that Rashid had dismissed, he also gave a big fist pump in the air.
