Here’s Why MS Dhoni Can Not Apply For India’s Chief Selector

The BCCI continues their search for their new Chairman of Selectors for the senior men’s team as the position has been left vacant since February when Chetan Sharma resigned from the post following his sensational sting operation where he revealed inside details relating to the BCCI and some Indian players.

The selection committee, which comprises Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath, has since been working without a Chief Selector, though SS Das has acted as interim Chief Selector. The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will be conducting interviews in July and perhaps by the end of the month, we will have the next Chief Selector for the senior men’s team.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni is ineligible to apply for selector’s post, here’s why:

One of the criteria for ex-Indian players to apply for the selector’s position is that the player must have retired from the game for at least five years. So, not only MS Dhoni has retired from international cricket for less than four years, he’s still an active player in the IPL.

As fans continue to ponder over who should be the next chairman of the selection committee, many fans also have opined that the best man for the job would be former India captain MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni is India’s most successful white-ball captain – he also took the team to the number 1 ranking in Test cricket – and he’s also the most successful IPL captain. Players have often hailed MS Dhoni for his determination to back the players he believes in and give them a long rope, something that’s been lacking in the captain and coaches after his stepping down as India’s captain.

However, MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020 but currently plays in the IPL, is ineligible to apply for the chief selector’s position.

Reportedly, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar, who last played in the IPL in 2013 and for India in 2007, is the frontrunner to take up the chief selector’s position.
