The Spirit of Cricket debate was sparked up once again after Jonny Bairstow‘s controversial run-out by Alex Carey on day 5 of the Lord’s Test of the ongoing Ashes 2023 series.
While many fans are saying that it was against the Spirit of the game, yet, others point out, it’s totally in the laws. A few others also seem to suggest that since Alex Carey‘s act of running out was against the intangible Spirit of Cricket, Australia should have reneged their appeal.
Jonny Bairstow’s run-out sparks up Spirit of Cricket debate
In the first session of Day 5, as Australia continued with their short ball ploy, Jonny Bairstow ducked under a harmless, medium-paced bumper from Cameron Green. It was the last ball of the over, and Bairstow was quick to move out of the crease and started walking toward the other end, where in the middle of the pitch he and his batting partner Ben Stokes would have a chat, as usually batters do.
However, Alex Carey was quick to react, and a second after collecting the ball, and seeing Jonny Bairstow walk out of his crease. Carey threw the ball at the stumps and hit the target with Bairstow well outside his crease, unaware that Carey has ran him out. Alex Carey was the first to start celebrating the run out before the other Aussies joined in. Bairstow was given out after checking with the third umpire.
Vikrant Gupta reminded fans of MS Dhoni
Vikrant Gupta took to Twitter to give his take on those fans who were saying that Australia should have taken back their appeal. Gupta recalled how MS Dhoni called back Ian Bell in the 2011 Test match in Nottingham after Bell was given out in controversial circumstances. Then, MS Dhoni had conferred with Sachin Tendulkar about recalling Bell, which turned the boos from the English crowd to cheers and applause, even as India went on to lose the Test match.
“Remember the Ian Bell incident, Trent Bridge 2011, India vs England? An almost similar run out but the crowd booed and English commentators cried during Tea break and Sachin Tendulkar prompted Dhoni to recall Bell. India lost the Test. And nobody gave them any Spirit of the Game medal #Ashes #Bairstow,” Vikrant Gupta tweeted.
