Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is known to make strong and bold statements, in which he calls out people and organizations for their wrongdoings and missay. However, one quote that is going viral on social media has taken fire and this has stunned everyone.
The BCCI has been facing a lot of criticism, flak, and trolling from cricket fans and ex-cricketers around the world because of their mismanagement and ticket fiasco for the World Cup 2023.
On the first three days of the World Cup, some of the empty seats in the stadiums – which, let it be made clear, got filled considerably in the evening and night – were the talking point among the fans. Even Michael Vaughan had tweeted on the pictures of empty seats during the initial matches of the tournament.
On Friday then, a quote on Twitter went viral on all social media in which not only did reportedly Sunil Gavaskar slam the BCCI, but also he said he’s ashamed to be an Indian.
This quote was posted by only one account, with the Twitter handle @ahadfoooty.
The tweet said: ‘Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports:
“I am ashamed to call myself Indian. This is the worst Cricket World Cup. Empty stadiums, no scoreboard, pathetic management from BCCI.”
Gavaskar didn’t hold back.’
Fact check: Did Sunil Gavaskar really said this?

No, this was a fake quote that was being spread on Twitter. Senior journalist Vijay Lokapally confirmed that Sunil Gavaskar didn’t make any such quote, and he bashed this Twitter user for spreading such fake quotes.
Vijay Lokapally commented: ‘Mr Sunil Gavaskar has not said this. How could anyone in his right mind attribute the words, ” I am ashamed to call myself Indian” to a proud Indian like him.’
Coming to the World Cup 2023, Gavaskar has said that India have to win the World Cup and also beat Pakistan on October 14. He picked India as his favorite.
“We have to win the World Cup but this match is important. In terms of expectations, if you ask the common man, he would say you have to win against Pakistan but we also have a World Cup to win. We are definitely favourites, no question about that,” said Gavaskar.
