It is truly an end of an era, and a turning page in the history of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), when MS Dhoni decided to step down as their captain. Ravindra Jadeja takes the baton.
The debate between who has been the best captain in the IPL and the most successful franchise is on rage.
The two leading contenders are Dhoni and CSK against Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians.

Now, interestingly, though, Mumbai Indians have won 5 titles to CSK’s 4, it is to be noted that CSK have played in 2 less seasons than MI – when they were banned in 2016 and 2017.
Further, here’s why CSK are regarded as the most consistent team in the IPL ahead of MI:
CSK have made it through the playoffs in 11 seasons out of the 12 that they participated in; the only time they failed to finish in the top 4 was in 2020. Of the 11 times they have reached the playoffs, CSK have reached the final of the IPL a record 9 times, winning the trophy 4 times.
Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have finished in the top four 9 nine times – 2 less than CSK while playing a couple of seasons more than Dhoni’s side – reaching the final on 6 occasions.
Further, if we look at their results deeper, CSK emerges as a slightly more consistent team throughout the tournament’s history. In the IPL – not considering the Champions League T20 tournament – CSK have a win percentage of 60.56, while Mumbai is slightly behind with win percentage of 58.52 in the IPL.
Not only CSK have qualified for the playoffs in more seasons than MI, but they have also finished at better positions on the points table – not just than MI but any team in the league. For that, we use the average league standings.
Averaging the teams’ position at the points table at the end of the league stage of every season, CSK have an average league standing of 2.67! This is better than all the other franchises; Mumbai Indians have an average league standing of 3.36 followed by the Sunrisers, Kolkata, and RCB. Delhi, Rajasthan, and Punjab have been the worst three sides among the eight in all IPL seasons with average league standings of over 5 of each of them.
