Aakash Chopra Named India’s No. 1 Spinner: India’s veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin has been one of the biggest assets of the Indian bowling line-up. He recently made a sensational return in India’s white-ball set up after the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League.
The legendary spinner also confirmed his return in the T20I mix when he was named in India’s star-studded squad for the T20 World Cup 2021. However, he was left out of the Test side of team India’s successful tour to England, but he presented a strong case to cement his place again in the playing XI of Rohit Sharma’s Team India
Ravi Ashwin also put up a stellar show in the recently concluded T20I series between India and New Zealand. Though currently, Ravi Ashwin is in the red-hot avatar, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra doesn’t consider India’s ace spinner as India’s no.1 spinner.
Ahead of India’s upcoming 1st Test match against New Zealand, Aakash Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, reckoned that Ravi Ashwin can make a comeback in the One Day Internationals for the Indian cricket team. Aakash also feels that sidelining Varun Chakravarthy after playing him in a couple of T20 World Cup 2021 matches isn’t a good story He said:
“If India are looking for that kind of a bowler, and not someone who searches for wickets, then he can make a comeback. If we look at wrist-spinners, India have sidelined Kuldeep Yadav, so they have only Yuzvendra Chahal and Rahul Chahar now. Varun Chakravarthy should also be in consideration. Sidelining him after playing him in a couple of T20 World Cup 2021 matches is not a good story,”
Meanwhile, India will be seen locking its horns against South Africa in their next ODI assignment. Talking about India’s next away tour to South Africa, Aakash Chopra hailed Yuzvendra Chahal as India’s No.1spinner in the ODIs. He said:
“According to me, the No. 1 spinner has to be Yuzvendra Chahal (in ODIs). Ravindra Jadeja has to play because India do not have all-rounders. I don’t see three spinners playing in South Africa, so it could be Chahal and Jadeja. Ashwin might actually be in the side. Axar Patel, Chahar and Chakravarthy could also be among the contenders,”
Talking about Yuzvendra Chahal, he was excellent in the UAE leg of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, where he picked up 18 wickets in 15 matches at a healthy economy of under 8. Unfortunately, he wasn’t included in the Indian squad that went to play the recently concluded T20 World Cup.
