Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has warned Shubman Gill ahead of the 3rd T20I match against West Indies on Tuesday (August 08) at Providence Stadium, Guyana. Shubman Gill has failed to contribute with the bat in the ongoing series, scoring just 10 runs in his two knocks. Aakash Chopra said that Gill’s spot in the team India squad is like a rented squad, highlighting the inconsistency.

Aakash Chopra Warns Shubman Gill

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said that Shubman Gill has to contribute with the bat in the upcoming games to save his spot.

Aakash Chopra further said that maybe Shubman Gill has been forcing the problem a bit as he had performed amazingly well in the Indian Premier League 2023.

“Shubman Gill will have to score runs. He played extremely well in the IPL but here it seems like he is just forcing the issue a bit too much. He is trying to play a big shot off every delivery but that’s not the Shubman Gill we know. Your place in the Indian team is like a rented house, you haven’t bought it,”

2 Reasons Why India Should Back Shubman Gill In T20I’s

Furthermore, Aakash Chopra said that Gill might be getting some relaxation from the team management but his spot is not permanent. He said:

“If you don’t pay the rent for four-five matches, you are asked to vacate the house. Everyone gets that much opportunity only. If someone has paid rent for six months because he has scored a lot of runs, he gets a little leeway. Shubman Gill is in that category but it cannot be permanent,”

Should Yashasvi Jaiswal Replace Gill?

Speaking about Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aakash Chopra feels that the 21-year-old batter can replace Ishan Kishan and not Gill since both Jaiswal and Kishan are left-handed batsmen. He said:

“Should Yashasvi (Jaiswal) be played? It is a very tempting option. He can be a straight swap for Ishan Kishan, a left-hander for a left-hander. If you see Ishan Kishan’s last 10 to 12 matches, his performances have not been that good,”

Notably, West Indies have taken a lead of 2-0 in the ongoing 5-match T20I series after winning 2 back-to-back games.
