In the Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians, the Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill cracked his third career IPL century – all his three tons have come in a space of 4 innings – which saw him go past 800 runs in the IPL 2023 season.
Shubman lit up the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad with a sensational knock of 129 runs off 60 balls with the help of 7 fours and 10 sixes. Gill’s ton propelled GT’s score to a mammoth 233, which MI will have to chase down if they have to proceed to face CSK in the final.
Gill brought up his century off 49 balls as GT raced near to 150 inside 15 overs. He was aggressive right from the start of his innings. The opeer got a reprieve when he was on the score of 30 when Tim David dropped a difficult chance – but one he could have taken – in the 6th over. After that, Gill even became more aggressive and reached to his century in 49 balls.
The 23-year-old became only the 4th batsman in the history of the IPL to record over 800 runs in an IPL season.
Shubman Gill leaved AB de Villiers speechless
RCB legend AB de Villiers was left dazzled by Gill’s pyrotechnics against Mumbai Indians. de Villiers took to Twitter to declare that he’s short of words to praise Gill.
“SHUBMAN GILL! Wow. I don’t really have words,” de Villiers tweeted.
A while later, ABD came up with another tweet dissecting Gill’s gameplay.
“His ability to identify moments and accelerate, with consistency, puts him in a class of his own. Also keep in mind, most of his games have been at Ahmedabad, one of the bigger grounds around. Well played Shubman,” ABD added.

In the mid-innings break, Shubman Gill said: “Got a good total, hopefully we will defend this. A lot, sweat went into my eyes and I was not able to open them. We have played our best cricket when we have lost and this is one of those days. Definitely it plays a part, you have to know which side to target, if it’s bigger boundaries and they bowl in good areas, look for doubles, smaller boundaries look to take it on. The new ball held up a bit, there was not much grass on that wicket, the ball was coming on nicely and with the outfield wet it stopped swinging after 2 overs. I wish this was possible – I will carry it everywhere [on this Ahmedabad pitch].”
