The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India and Mumbai pacer Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of India men’s national selection committee on Tuesday, 4th July.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape, interviewed several candidates for the one vacant position of chairman of selectors and unanimously recommended Agarkar for the said position.
It has to be noted that the chief selector’s post was vacant since Chetan Sharma resigned from the position in February following a sting operation conducted on him by an Indian television network. With this, Ajit Agarkar has become the 5th member of the India men’s selection panel which already includes Shiv Sunder Das, Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee, and S Sharath.
How much salary will Ajit Agarkar receive from the BCCI?
Meanwhile, according to reports, Ajit Agarkar will receive a salary of 3 crore per annum from the BCCI. Earlier the salary for this position was INR 1 crore.
Ajit, who was working as a commentator and coach, earned more than what the BCCI was offering before. His appointment as the chairman of selectors has forced the BCCI to review its existing pay structure.
Agarkar is also easily the most high-profile and most experienced member of the selection committee in close to a decade. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner has represented India in 191 ODIs apart from 26 Tests and 4 T20Is. He also holds the record for scoring the fastest ODI half-century by an Indian and is also the fastest Indian to reach 50 ODI wickets.
Ajit Agarkar’s first assignment will be to chair the selection committee on India’s T20I squad for the upcoming 5-match series against West Indies. The meeting is expected to take place later this week. The Indian cricket team will play two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is in and against the West Indies.
