Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra emphasizes the need to grasp Mumbai Indians’ reasoning for appointing Hardik Pandya as their new captain instead of Rohit Sharma.
Mumbai Indians made headlines when they acquired Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans before the IPL 2024 auction, sparking a flurry of discussions on social media. However, the scrutiny intensified when the franchise announced Hardik as their new captain, leading to widespread debate and analysis among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike. Many questioned the rationale behind this decision and speculated on its potential implications for the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
Anjum Chopra On MI Replacing Rohit Sharma With Hardik Pandya
In an interview with TOI, Anjum Chopra attempted to unravel Mumbai Indians’ rationale for appointing Hardik Pandya as Rohit Sharma’s successor ahead of IPL 2024. She said:
“A player’s job is to play the game. You always walk into a team as a player. You never walk into a team as a captain. How we are seeing from the outside, how the franchise is looking at it from the inside, and now players are looking at it, they have their reasons. It wouldn’t have been easy to replace a player and captain of Rohit Sharma’s stature. But someday that will happen,”
In a recent interview with Smash Sports, MI head coach Mark Boucher attempted to justify the decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain. However, Ritika, Rohit’s wife, expressed disagreement with Boucher’s explanation in a comment on the Instagram video, intensifying the controversy.
Anjum Chopra also highlighted the significance of the moment when Rohit Sharma was initially appointed as MI’s captain during IPL 2013. At that time, the team boasted stalwarts like Ricky Ponting, Harbhajan Singh, and Sachin Tendulkar. According to Chopra, it’s crucial to consider the future of MI and be prepared to make tough decisions when necessary.
“When Rohit was given captaincy for Mumbai Indians, it wouldn’t have been a very easy decision. At that time many stalwarts and experienced players were playing and Rohit was given the captaincy. MI gave him the captaincy because of his ability and Rohit went on to guide MI to five title wins. Let’s not run into emotions. It’s about balancing things considering the present and future of the team,”
The future will reveal whether Mumbai Indians’ decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as captain could lead to any conflicts within the team and affect their performance on the field.
MI is set to kick off their IPL 2024 journey against Hardik’s previous team, the Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad on March 24.
