Rishi Sunak created history by becoming the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His crowing moment became even more special as it coincided with Diwali celebrations in India and elsewhere. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages for Rishi and many are terming his election as UK’s PM as ‘ground-breaking’.
For the unversed, Rishi is the UK-born son of an Indian-origin general practitioner father Yashvir, and a pharmacist mother Usha. He had spoken extensively of his migrant roots during his last campaign. Rishi’s victory is a remarkable turnaround in political fortunes. He also referenced making history by lighting Diwali diyas at 11 Downing Street as the first Indian-origin Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Sunak becomes the 57th prime minister of the UK and the first person of color to lead the country. Rishi is also UK’s first Hindu premier but Rishi has rarely spoken about his religion despite being a practicing Hindu. He had announced his bid to become the prime minister days after the outgoing prime minister Liz Truss announced her resignation on October 20 after the members of the party rebelled against her citing that her mini-budget negatively affected the UK economy.
Meanwhile, following this astounding election, a section of social media users found similarities between him and Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra and shared some hilarious pictures comparing the two. It is really fascinating how Sunak and Nehra resemble each other, looks-wise.
Yes, after Sunak’s victory in the UK elections, Ashish Nehra started to trend on Twitter. Commenting on how closely Ashish Nehra and Rishi resemble each other, a Twitter user said, “Well done Ashish Nehra on becoming the next UK Prime Minister. Bring ‘IT’ home. #Kohinoor #RishiSunak (sic).” Another commented, ” “Rishi Sunak and Ashish Nehra seem to be brothers who were estranged in Kumbh Ka Mela (sic).
